![]() ![]() Shona distracts herself with Christmas music. ![]() Their human hosts are pressed into service, shambling towards the heroes. Thinking about the facehuggers stirs them into action. Basically some hapless humans have telepathic facehuggers attached to their skulls. Since they don”t know the rules, they immediately start looking at and thinking about the sleepers. Instead the Doctor and Clara appear at the door. My biggest fear that she”ll accidentally flail into one of the creatures isn”t realized. To distract herself from not thinking about purple giraffes, or creepy sleepers, Shona is rocking out to Christmas music with her eyes closed. Either Moffat has actually turned a new leaf, or someone in a position of power at the BBC forced the issue of fixing Doctor Who”s misogyny problem. Ashley and Bellows are even displeased with his casual sexism. Professor Albert is the lone dude scientist. Oh great, it”s a purple giraffe situation.Īlso, for the billionth time this season the gender tables are turned. Shona is about to go confront the four sleepers to try and get to…something? Someone? Either way, Shona will be fine as long as she doesn't look at the sleepers or think about them. Elsewhere in the facility, her associates provide moral support from the control room. A blonde lady – Shona – stands outside the infirmary with trepidation. And something decidedly un-Christmas like is going down. In the midst of a blizzard sits a research facility. I will assume this is the North Pole until told otherwise. ![]() You know, normal stuff.įor reasons unknown, we skip to a barren icy plane. The entirety of humanity may hinge on whether or not Clara Oswald believes in Santa Claus. She”s been mourning the loss of the love of her life and her best friend, but now there”s an adventure to distract her again. After an indeterminate amount of time alone, without Twelve or Danny, she is back on the TARDIS. Something major is up but Clara Oswald doesn”t care. Twelve sizes up Santa, tells him “Happy Easter,” and climbs back into his police box. Clara obeys, a sure sign that she is in shock. Just another Tuesday night at the Oswald home. Out bursts Twelve in a hoodie, which is odd and quite frankly dashing, and demands Clara stop talking to Santa Claus and get in the TARDIS. ![]() Clara states she just “outgrew fairy tales” and on cue, the TARDIS sound kicks on. In disappointed dad fashion, Santa pulls out a checklist and notes Clara stopped believing when she was nine. Also, so adorable that Santa grew out the beard as a disguise and it backfired, making him more recognizable than ever. Time to grow up and live in the real world. The elves scoff at the fairy tale story that one night a year, all the parents in the world got together and decided to give their kids presents because they love them so much. There”s a great bit of subversion for the kids on the cusp on disbelief while they watch this. Sidenote: Are the tangerine gifts a British thing? We don”t have that tradition in the US. Spotted by a human, Santa tries to defuse the situation by saying no, obviously he is not Father Christmas! For a magical elf whose livelihood is based in subterfuge, Santa sure is a terrible liar. Santa has crashed his sleigh and the reindeer are free at last and refuse to come down. Clad only in her nightgown and robe, she goes to investigate. Obviously Christmas Eve.Ĭlara is nestled all snug in her bed, when from outside she hears the sound of Santa and his elves bickering on the roof. Like countless holiday specials before it, and countless ones yet to come, the episode opens with a decorated Christmas tree framed by windows. Break out the tissues because you”re going to need them during “Last Christmas.” The last time we saw Twelve and Clara, they were recreating the darkest timeline version of “The Gift of the Magi.” The Doctor lied to Clara about finding Gallifrey so she”d want to stay with Danny and be happy, while Clara lied about Danny being alive so the Doctor would return home to his people on Gallifrey.Įveryone”s a liar and everything hurts. Welcome back, Whovians! I hope everyone had a nice break, but it”s time to get back to it, at least for one episode. ![]()

![]() ![]() In many ways he's who makes the book possible because - Christian Bale gets this across but it's never said in the movie - he has Asperger's syndrome. Possibly the weirdest is this doctor, Dr. McEvers: Let's talk about the main characters in The Big Short, the group of people who, a long time before it happened, figured out that we were heading off of a financial cliff and then basically made this huge financial bet that it was going to happen, thus "the big short." In the film, you describe them as "outsiders" and "weirdoes". So, you know, is it pandering? You know, in a massive, massive way that hopefully is more satirical than sincerely pandering. You know, we wanted to fill the movie with these images of music videos and iPhones and just this idea that we get so much information during the day that doesn't really tell us anything, but what if Kim Kardashian, every time you heard her on TV she described like the LIBOR Rate scandal or. I just have to ask, did you ever think you were pandering just a little too much to the audience?Īdam: The whole idea was it was a joke on pop culture. McEvers: At one point there's a naked lady in a bathtub explaining one of these things. And because he was able to tie that information to their stories, I was able to digest it. He wrote a book that was kind of amazing in the sense that it fused these incredible characters with a lot of dense information. Adam, were you intimidated by that?Īdam McKay: You know, I'm going to do something I don't like to do which is I'm going to give Michael Lewis a lot of credit. It's a little bit easier in a book - people can take their time, you can sort of go back and reread - but in a movie you've got two hours to not only explain things like collateralized debt obligations, but you also have to make it entertaining. Kelly McEvers: The way the housing market imploded is obviously not an easy thing to explain. McKay and Lewis join NPR's Kelly McEvers to discuss the story's antiheroes and the film's approach to explaining finance: McKay's film received four Golden Globe nominations this week, including one for best screenplay. The result (also called The Big Short) has bad guys and heroes - but even the heroes are kind of jerks. How do you make a subject as complicated as the subprime mortgage crisis into a really good movie? That's the challenge director Adam McKay took on when decided to turn The Big Short, Michael Lewis' best-selling book about the people who profited from the crisis, into a film. Jaap Buitendijk/Courtesy of Paramount Pictures Mark Baum make a large chunk of money and feel absolutely disgusted by it." Director Adam McKay says, "One of my favorite moments in the movie is where you see. ![]() And with these characters they’re insider insights.Steve Carell plays Mark Baum and Ryan Gosling plays Jared Vennett in The Big Short. Before it gets saintly The Big Short is a big, clever chortle, full of sardonic insights into a time of woe. But audiences should disregard deathbed contritions. Later the pious speeches start multiplying. When you’re an actor/producer/demigod you just have to give yourself the first pious speech out of the film’s trap. A film on this subject could still have gone wrong, even with actors such as Christian Bale (superb), Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell and Brad Pitt. They detected the death bug in Wall Street’s culture of derivatives, CDOs and institutionalised fraudulence. Lewis’s “heroes just for one day” - to give them a Bowie benediction - were the rebel brokers who bet against the banks in the prelude to 2008. This is a barbed, often brilliant comedy drama, directed and co-scripted (with Charles Randolph) by Adam Anchorman McKay from Michael Lewis’s same-name book about the build-up to the banking crisis. I repeat in the UK what a colleague pronounced from the US opening. ![]() As an FT film critic I’d be writing at greater length about The Big Short if the film hadn’t already been taken to its heart by the pink paper. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The multiplayer component comes with an auto-patching feature, which is nice, but then the game crashed after I installed the first patch. Fortunately, that only happened once, but there were other problems, such as saved games not loading properly and in-game actions (like cracking a safe) simply not working at all. For the first time in years, I experienced the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. I'm amazed that Double Agent is such a resource hog.Įven if your rig is powerful enough to run the game at acceptable detail settings, you may still experience frustration in the form of glitches, bugs, and crashes. Sam Fisher looks more muscular and has greater detail in his face and head, but that's about it. In fact, the visual improvements over Chaos Theory are not significant. Now don't get excited and rush out to buy a new video card because the graphics are nothing special. Nothing has ever slowed my system down to this level. Playing the game on an ATI Radeon X1900 XTX, the highest supported ATI card listed on the box, the game chugged on "standard" in-game video settings and at a modest resolution. To run this game, you'll need 8GB of hard-disk space and a beefy video card. You've just learned to drag their bodies into the shadows to avoid detection. Let's face it: Even when you play the good guy, you still kill plenty of innocents. Yes, you have two bosses competing for your loyalty, but pleasing them both isn't very difficult and doesn't really call for you to make many interesting "moral" decisions. ![]() I found that this new scenario made little difference to gameplay. To earn and maintain their trust, he is sometimes called upon to perform various bad acts, blurring the line between right and wrong. The new twist in Double Agent is that Sam is called upon to go undercover and make friends on the inside of a terrorist organization. Granted, it's an awesome sight, but some players may wish they had more control over Sam's movements. For example, Sam may start climbing a pipe when all you were trying to do was walk in front of it, or he may jump out of a frozen lake, grab an armed guard you didn't even know was there, pull him down through a hole in the ice, pull out a blade, and stab the guard in the chest, all because you merely pressed the "up" key. Generally speaking, if Sam is capable of performing some trick and you move him to the approximate area, he will perform the trick, whether you were trying to get him to or not. For better or worse, Sam does just about everything automatically. Performing these fancy moves does not require that the player memorize extended combinations of keys. For example, Sam can climb pipes, peek around corners, crawl through vents, hang from ledges, slide along ropes or zip lines, swim, and can perform numerous other nifty tricks, like the beloved "inverted neck snap." The camera follows your player from a third-person perspective, and much of the joy of playing derives from watching Sam Fisher's fluid and realistic movements as he navigates about the map and executes a wide variety of special moves. You are assigned a series of missions, most of which require that you infiltrate enemy territory and accomplish some goal (hack a computer, steal documents, or defuse a bomb) either without being seen by anyone or with minimal casualties. The general thrust of the Splinter Cell series goes something like this: You play the role of Sam Fisher, government spy. For those already familiar with the series – and I suspect that includes most of you – Double Agent is enjoyable, but its single-player campaign offers little you haven't already seen before in Chaos Theory and earlier iterations of the game. Nothing out there quite duplicates Splinter Cell's unique blend of stealth action, high-tech gadgetry, and gorgeous third-person visual effects. If you've never played a game in the Splinter Cell series, you owe it to yourself to give Splinter Cell Double Agent a try. ![]() ![]() ![]() apply in theme chooser and reboot (important)įor any question, problem or request, send me a mail.
